Work continues on the Jane Byrne interchange during the winter months. As a reminder, pay attention while driving through the construction zone. Conditions change in the work zone (including) lane shifts and closures, slow moving vehicles and workers performing construction activities. Please slow down and obey the posted speed limits.
The project involves construction of a new flyover structure from Northbound I-90/94 (Dan Ryan Expressway) to I-290 Westbound (Eisenhower Expressway). The Department’s con- tractor is ready to place the new curved steel beams over the expressway. This complicated work involves closure of lanes for worker and traffic safety.
The level of traffic control to create a safe work zone is very extensive and involves multi- lane expressway closures, ramp closures, full expressway stops during off peak hours, and mobilization of traffic control personnel. This process of setting up traffic control will take approximately 6 to 8 hours and then 6 to 8 hours to remove.

As part of the overall Circle Interchange project, the Peoria Street Bridge, as well as the adjacent CTA Blue Line Station, will be closed for construction beginning May 2014 until Summer 2015. There will be limited access to pedestrian traffic and anticipate the elevator to be installed in November 2015. For ADA accessibility, please use Halsted CTA station.
The Peoria Street Bridge will be closed in its entirety and will be reopened to pedestrian traffic in Summer 2015. The CTA Blue Line station will be closed for rehabilitation and is anticipated to be reopened in Summer 2015.
The detour for pedestrian traffic for the Peoria Street Bridge closure will be:
-Van Buren Street to Morgan Street to Harrison Street, and
-Van Buren Street to Halsted Street to Harrison Street.
The nearby CTA station entrances at Morgan Street and Halsted Street will be opened during the construction of the Peoria Street project.
The construction contract was awarded to Kiewit Infrastructure Co. on March 31, 2014, and the work involves the complete removal and replacement of the existing bridge structure which carries Peoria Street over the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290). The new bridge structure will be longer to create space underneath along I-290 for future improvements planned for the interchange between the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) and I-290, locally known as the Circle Interchange. The Peoria Street project also includes the associated work along the Peoria Street corridor from Harrison Street to Van Buren Street to make it a pedestrian/bicyclist only facility. Landscaping, lighting, wayfinding signage, and other features will be incorporated.
The existing brick CTA station is located on the Peoria Street Bridge, and will be removed as part of the project. The project also includes the rehabilitation of the existing glass station house adjacent to the Peoria Street Bridge. The rehabilitation will include the installation of a new ADA compliant elevator, roof replacement, new exterior panels, replacement lighting, installation of surveillance cameras, and relocating the turnstiles into the glass building.
-When completed, Peoria Street will provide a corridor for pedestrians and bicyclists only.
-The bridge will be over 50 feet wide to provide an open feeling when crossing the expressway
-The Peoria Street pavement north of the bridge will be converted to a pedestrian way
-Sidewalk south of the bridge will be widened to Harrison Street
-Landscape and aesthetic features will be added including plantings, irrigation, lighting, sitting walls, and wayfinding signage
-Sidewalks will be reconstructed to current ADA standards per the City of Chicago requirements
-CTA station will be upgraded to include a new ADA compliant elevator, new roof, new exterior panels, replacement lighting, and surveillance cameras.
The Department appreciates your patience and understanding as we work to improve the multi-modal connections in your community.

IDOT: Completion Date for Morgan Street Bridge Extended to Fall 2014 |
||
|
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that the ongoing work on the Morgan Street Bridge over I-290 has been extended to early September 2014. The work, initially scheduled for completion April 30, 2014, is part of the ongoing Circle Interchange Project. The work will continue to require nightly lane closures on EB and WB I-290 at the Morgan Street Bridge. Traffic on I-290 will be reduced at times during off-peak hours. Heavy equipment will be required during the demolition, resulting in substantial amount of noise during the evening construction. Motorists can expect significant delays during times when the lane closures are in effect and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signing in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, and be on the alert for workers and equipment. Find details on other construction projects in IDOT’s District 1 at www.dot.state.il.us. Updates on the impacts to traffic are available at www.travelmidwest.com. |
